CEPOL

Hungarian National Unit of the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Training

CEPOL, located in Budapest since 2014, is an agency of the European Union that provides training for law enforcement officials throughout the EU and beyond.

The Agency, which develops, implements and coordinates training courses, offers a wide range of training opportunities not only for police officers, but also for tax and customs officials and judicial officers as well. Through its activities, the Agency strengthens the EU’s internal-security and contributes especially to the fight against terrorism, organized crime, drug trafficking, trafficking in human beings and direct threats to European lifestyle.

The Agency has a National Unit in each Member State to provide information and assistance for law enforcement experts who wish to participate in CEPOL activities. The National Unit is also responsible for liaising with the Agency and the representatives of the Member States, coordinating and providing information to facilitate cooperation and ensuring the proper day-to-day operation of the network.

In Hungary, the Hungarian CEPOL National Unit (CNU) of the International Training Centre fulfills this task.

Nominations for CEPOL courses can only be submitted via the National Unit. The Hungarian CNU, in liaison with the Hungarian law enforcement and judicial authorities, disseminates the training courses organized by CEPOL and the Member States to the relevant actors through its contact points, and then decides who will represent Hungary in the course after examining the applications received.

CEPOL courses are held entirely in English, so only applicants with appropriate level of language skills can be delegated to international activities.

However, the Hungarian CNU not only facilitates the participation of law enforcement officials in training courses abroad, but also organizes special activities under the auspices of CEPOL.

The portfolio changes from year to year, and tries to adapt to current expectations and to include courses that are relevant to the Member States.

In addition to the traditional law enforcement courses, it can be noted that in recent years a number of other specialized skill-building activities have been organized in Hungary (medical response to mass casualty incidents, disaster victim identification).
